Backyard Composting Workshop

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

The Knoxville Compost Project's next backyard compost workshop is here! Join Dr. Chad Hellwinckel of UT and City Possum Farm, as he discusses the importance of composting, how to properly turn food scraps into quality compost, & any trouble-shooting. Attendees will receive one free backyard compost tumbler & one countertop food scrap collection bin per household. Tickets for this event go live April 19. If you'd like to be the first to know when tickets go on sale, click here.

This event is limited to 30 people. Those who attended a previous workshop are not eligible to attend another. You are welcome to bring 1 additional member of your household but please make sure to indicate this and list their full name when prompted during your registration. Although the event is limited, the public is invited to attend the workshop with the understanding they will not receive the compost tumbler or countertop food scrap bin once all tickets have been reserved.

The City of Knoxville's Waste and Resources Office was awarded the USDA Composting & Food Waste Reduction Grant in 2023. To help us fulfill the requirements of the grant, which supports the expansion of our composting efforts, all participants of the workshop must agree to answer a questionnaire. This will be emailed to you 9 months post-workshop to give you enough time to produce compost. The questionnaire is essential to our reporting of certain metrics to the USDA and in improving future workshops.

You will be asked to report on topics such as the following:

1 . Approximate amount of food waste your household contributes each week

2 . Any composting challenges faced

3 . Approximate amount of compost produced

4 . If any compost was applied to soil to grow food

**Due to high demand from previous workshops, those who register for this workshop will be REQUIRED TO RECONFIRM THEIR ATTENDANCE via e-mail 3 DAYS BEFORE the event. If confirmation is not received, your ticket will be released to those on the waitlist. Please keep a lookout for a confirmation email on Monday, April 29th that must be confirmed by Wednesday, May 1st.**

Future backyard composting workshops will be held - visit Knoxvilletn.gov/Compost for updates and other Knoxville Compost Project information. We look forward to seeing you!

First Friday Art Gala: Flourishing Moments

First Friday Art Gala: Flourishing Moments

Beardsley’s annual Garden Art Gala is a free event that is intended to promote creativity and bring the community together over art, music, and fun on the farm. We will be hosting visual artists, crafts folks, and performers on the farm (1741 Reynolds St.) and throughout Malcolm-Martin park. We will provide free drinks and light snacks, and there will also be meals available for purchase from a local vendor.  Event will be on June 2nd, 2023, from 4pm-8pm.

Dress Code: Farmer or Classic Art Gala or Both! Think overalls with heels, ties and cargo pants, etc. Make it fun and however you'd like! (not required of course! Just a fun idea)

Over the past 25 years at Beardsley Farm, we have seen the fruits of our combined labor of planting a seed, watering a garden bed, and harvesting fruits. But in between the distributions we’ve held and the classes we’ve taught lie the juicy moments of joy that make life really sweet at the farm: dancing silly in the beet beds, mimicking a bee waggle dance, seeing someone taste a fresh-off-the-vine ripe strawberry for the first time, asking fun life questions while weeding, and finding special moments together among the long days of planting. These moments are what makes Beardsley flourish, and the art gala this year will be celebrating all the moments that make our lives and our communities flourish. We are showcasing and celebrating work that explores the ideals of life and growth: being silly, carefree, and safe,  the perfect bite of food, open belly laughter, getting that thing stuck in your tooth out… finally, limited suffering and endless goodness for all involved. Big, small, forgotten, or upheld: enjoy the warmth and silliness of life, moments of connection, the minds, beings and all that can encompass this thrill.
